Constructing Spaces in Literature, Linguistics and Culture

May 6-7th^, 2011

Space as a multidimensional concept has been constructed by humans through languages, arts, politics, and history. Our realities are a result of our interpretation of the space of which we are part. Such spaces are cultural, emotional, and sacred in nature, among others. It also creates limits and boundaries that need to be challenged. 

Our intention in this conference is to question and explore such limits and boundaries established by languages, literary works, and cultural movements with an interdisciplinary approach.

Submission Policy:
Individual presentations should be no longer than 20 minutes. Abstracts and panel proposals must be at most 250 words. The body of the e-mail should contain the following information: title of the paper/panel proposal, area of specialization, name, e-mail, and affiliation of the author(s). The subject of the email should be ";;;;Abstract UCSB 2011.";;;;

Deadline for submission of abstracts: April 1st, 2011

Conference Fee for accepted presenters is $20 for Graduate Students.

Publishing Opportunity – Our graduate online student journal Tinta will publish selected papers presented in this conference in our Fall 2011 issue under Conference Proceedings. Papers should be between 12 and 16 pages (including cited-work), double space, 12-point font Times New Roman, and should follow MLA standards. The deadline to submit papers for the publication is May 7, 2011.

This conference is organized by the Graduate Student Organization of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Santa Barbara in order to give other graduate students an opportunity to share their current work and areas of research. We invite and encourage all submissions from interdisciplinary perspectives written in Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, or English.

The University of California, Santa Barbara is located about 90 miles north of Los Angeles and is situated directly on the Pacific Ocean.  The area is known for is gorgeous beaches, temperate weather, Spanish style architecture, and tourist attractions.  The weather in May promises to be sunny and warm, so plan a little extra time to enjoy the surroundings. 

Traveling to Santa Barbara

For those participants flying to the conference the Santa Barbara Airport is located close the university and various hotels.  The days of the conference we will be offering to pick up anyone who is arriving to the Santa Barbara airport who needs a ride to their hotel.

Another option is to fly into Los Angeles International Airport and take a bus or rent a car and drive to Santa Barbara.  Plane tickets to LAX tend to be less expensive.  The Santa Barbara Airbus runs between LAX and Santa Barbara/Goleta.

If coming by car the University of Santa Barbara is located off highway 101, about 90 miles north of Los Angeles. 

The Amtrak Surfliner also runs through Santa Barbara.  You can check the schedule at the Amtrak website

A rental car is not a necessity in Santa Barbara.  Most locations are accessible by public transportation and all conference events will take place at the university.  If you are planning to do additional traveling, however, a rental car would be advisable. 

Lodging in Santa Barbara

There are several hotels located near the university in the town of Goleta.  Goleta is about 10 miles north of downtown Santa Barbara.  The public transportation system is good, and both the university and downtown can be accessed by public buses.
